subaru XV Review

39. SUVHUB Review: Subaru XV / Crosstrek (1st Gen)

1. Introduction: The Big Picture The Subaru XV, first launched in 2012 (and known as the Crosstrek in some markets), is the Forester's younger, more stylish sibling. This review covers the first generation, which ran until the 2017 model year. In Tanzania, the XV appeals to a younger, more active buyer who wants Subaru's legendary Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and a high ground clearance, but in a more compact, city-friendly, and distinctively styled package.

2. Design & Aesthetics The XV's design is based on the Impreza hatchback but with a much tougher look. It features rugged black body cladding, a higher ride height, and unique, funky alloy wheels. It looks adventurous and sporty. The interior is well-built and functional, with a sporty feel and good quality materials. It's a car with a lot of personality.

3. Performance & Engine Options

  • Engine Specs & Power: It is powered by a reliable and efficient 2.0L Boxer petrol engine (FB20), producing around 148 hp.

  • On-Road Performance & Acceleration: Thanks to its low centre of gravity (from the Boxer engine) and Impreza underpinnings, the XV handles exceptionally well. It feels agile, stable, and fun to drive, with the added security of full-time AWD.

  • Off-Road Capability & Ground Clearance: This is its standout feature. With the same excellent ground clearance as a Forester (220 mm) and Symmetrical AWD, the XV is by far the most capable vehicle in its compact crossover class. It can easily handle rough roads and trails that would challenge much larger SUVs.

4. Fuel Efficiency

  • 2.0L Petrol Model: Very efficient, delivering around 11-14 km/L in mixed driving.

5. Space, Dimensions & Technology

  • Overall Dimensions: 4,450 mm (L) x 1,780 mm (W) x 1,570 mm (H).

  • Interior Space: Being based on a hatchback, the cabin is cozy. It's comfortable for front passengers, with adequate space for adults in the rear on shorter journeys.

  • Luggage/Boot Space: The boot is its main compromise, at a relatively small 380 litres. It’s fine for daily use, but packing for a long family trip requires some creativity.

6. Safety Features The XV has a top-tier 5-star safety rating, with a full suite of airbags and Subaru's VDC stability control system, making it a very safe compact vehicle.

7. Practicality & Ownership Costs The FB20 engine is reliable and shared with other Subarus. As with a Forester, it's best maintained by a specialist fundi who understands Boxer engines. Parts are readily available through Subaru specialists, though can be a bit more expensive than Toyota parts.

8. Pricing in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (As of June 2025) (Note: Prices vary based on condition and spec. USD prices are approximate, based on a rate of $1 = 2,610 TZS.)

  • Foreign Used (Import): A clean, imported 2016-2017 model with all TRA taxes paid will range from TZS 45,000,000 – TZS 60,000,000 (Approx. $17,200 – $23,000 USD).

  • Locally Used (Already Registered): A 2013-2015 local model will typically be priced from TZS 35,000,000 – TZS 45,000,000 (Approx. $13,400 – $17,200 USD).

9. The SUVHUB Verdict The Subaru XV is a uniquely capable and stylish compact crossover. It offers a fun driving experience, fantastic fuel economy, and off-road ability that is unmatched by any of its direct rivals. It's the perfect choice for the adventurous individual or small family. Final Verdict: The Compact Adventurer. Capable and Cool.

10. Key Competitors in Tanzania

  • Nissan Juke

  • Mazda CX-3

  • Honda Vezel / HR-V

  • Suzuki Escudo/Vitara

Our Verdict

A solid choice for Kenyan roads.
